Copper roofing is a specialized craft. Not every roofing contractor has the skills, tools, or experience to install or repair copper correctly. Choosing the wrong contractor can result in premature failure, voided warranties, and costly repairs. Here are the seven questions you should ask before hiring a copper roofing contractor in Boston.
1. How many copper roofing projects have you completed in the past 5 years?
Copper roofing is a specialty. A contractor who does one or two copper jobs a year is not a copper specialist — they're a general roofer who occasionally works with copper. Look for a contractor who completes 20+ copper projects annually.
2. Can you provide references from similar copper roofing projects in Boston?
Ask for references from projects similar to yours — same roof type, similar historic district requirements, similar scale. Call the references and ask specifically about the quality of the copper work, not just general satisfaction.
3. What gauge copper do you use, and why?
A knowledgeable contractor will specify 16 oz. or 20 oz. copper for residential applications and explain why. Be wary of contractors who use 12–14 oz. copper to reduce costs — it is more prone to fatigue cracking and has a shorter lifespan.
4. Are you familiar with Boston Landmarks Commission requirements?
If your property is in a historic district, your contractor must understand the approval process, documentation requirements, and approved materials and methods. Ask for examples of projects they've completed in historic districts.
5. What warranty do you provide on your copper roofing work?
A reputable copper roofing contractor should offer at minimum a 10-year workmanship warranty. Be wary of contractors who offer only a 1–2 year warranty — it suggests they are not confident in the quality of their work.
6. Are you licensed, insured, and bonded in Massachusetts?
Verify the contractor's Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor (HIC) license, general liability insurance (minimum $1M, preferably $5M), and workers' compensation coverage. Ask for certificates of insurance naming you as additional insured.
7. Will you provide a detailed written estimate with material specifications?
A professional copper roofing contractor will provide a detailed written estimate specifying the copper gauge, seam type, solder type, fastener specifications, and warranty terms. Vague estimates are a red flag.
